Chassis
12323 and 12324
– Providing history on these two roadsters requires a high degree of
speculation. The two white
cars were identical differing only by an oil temperature gauge (12323),
interior color and an adjustable seat (12324).
They were built by Heuer two weeks apart, delivered to Hoffman
two weeks apart and sold to their first customers two weeks apart.
Glenn Carroll, a Trego mechanic, recalls Ed Trego wrecked one of the ARs
in a traffic accident.
This was in the 1953 time frame and by process of elimination the
car must have been chassis number 12323. 12324 was most likely the America Roadster owned and raced by Ed Crawford in 1953. The Trego dealership or Crawford may have been the initial owner but Ed put the car up for sale in 1954. The car was extensively stripped and modified for racing. Turn signals and tail lights were removed, a gas filler through the hood was added, the interior was replaced by black flock and the gear shift linkage replaced by a stiffer mechanism that resulted in the shift pattern being inverted. The car was later photographed in 1955 being drag raced by Jan Brundage although he was not the owner at that time. The Kardex shows12324 received a new engine in 1962 for A. Buchwinkler but no evidence of the car can be found after that date. |
